We talk about modern performance cars as if speed is the only thing our bodies can measure. Horsepower, acceleration, top speed and lap times dominate every launch. Yet one of the strongest memories a car can create often has nothing to do with a stopwatch. It is sound.
That is why Bugatti’s latest development story about the Tourbillon interests me. The company has spent years engineering the acoustic character of its new naturally aspirated V16, and the most important detail is almost old-fashioned: what you hear in the cabin comes from the machine itself.
A different sixteen-cylinder identity
For more than two decades Bugatti was defined by the W16. The Veyron, Chiron, Bolide and Mistral made that architecture part of the brand’s identity. Replacing it with a naturally aspirated V16 paired with an electric powertrain could easily have produced a technically spectacular car with less personality.
Instead, Bugatti treated the new engine note as an engineering programme of its own. The company says thousands of simulations were used while developing intake and exhaust behaviour. After three years of Tourbillon development, the acoustic character has now reached its final major form.
The naturally aspirated V16 revs to 9,000 rpm. That alone creates a different kind of sound from the old quad-turbocharged W16, but rpm is only part of the story. Intake resonance, exhaust geometry, load, throttle position, body structure and even the aerodynamic systems affect what the driver and the homologation microphones hear.
No fake soundtrack
The sentence I care about most is that the Tourbillon’s engine sound is entirely mechanical in origin. Bugatti is not using the audio system to manufacture an artificial engine note for the occupants.
I do not object to every form of acoustic enhancement. Modern cars are heavily insulated, turbocharged, filtered and regulated; engineers sometimes use speakers to restore information that the physical car no longer communicates clearly. But there is a difference between amplification and invention.
When the sound itself becomes synthetic, another part of the relationship between driver and machine becomes software. In an ordinary commuter that may not matter. In a multi-million-euro Bugatti whose entire purpose is to create an extraordinary mechanical experience, it matters enormously.
The difficult part is making emotion legal
Modern noise homologation is not simply a microphone held behind the exhaust. Bugatti says the maximum permitted level for the relevant test is 72 decibels, with the final result determined through a combination of constant-speed and accelerated measurements.
The microphones hear the whole vehicle: tyres, body, airflow and active aerodynamic elements as well as the engine. Weather matters too. Temperature and wind need to remain within defined limits, and a gust can invalidate a run.
That makes the engineering challenge more interesting. The target is not maximum volume. Anyone can make a car loud. The challenge is to create a recognisable, emotionally rich sound while staying inside increasingly strict external-noise rules.
Why this matters beyond Bugatti
Electrification does not automatically mean character has to disappear. The Tourbillon is hybrid, but Bugatti has used the electric part of the powertrain alongside a huge naturally aspirated engine rather than as an excuse to make the combustion side anonymous.
I think that is an important lesson for performance cars generally. Technology should expand what a car can do without deleting the sensory qualities that made people care about cars in the first place.
We are already entering an era where raw acceleration is cheap. A family EV can deliver numbers that once belonged to supercars. That means emotion becomes more valuable, not less. Steering feel, brake response, seating position, vibration, gearbox interaction and sound are the things that separate an appliance from an object people remember.
The Tourbillon will be absurdly fast. Nobody doubts that. But if owners remember the way a 9,000-rpm V16 sounds long after they have stopped caring about its acceleration figure, Bugatti will have engineered the more important number.
