Mercedes-AMG has spent the last few years moving deeper into electrification, hybrid assistance and increasingly complex performance systems. That is exactly why the new Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung feels so unexpected.
Revealed on September 10, 2026, the new high-performance coupé is built around a very simple idea: reduce weight, keep a serious V8, send the power to the rear wheels and focus the entire car on driving dynamics.
646 hp, V8 power and rear-wheel drive
According to Mercedes-AMG, the CLE 646 uses a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo producing 646 hp (475 kW). Unlike the increasingly common all-wheel-drive formula used by very fast modern performance cars, this car is rear-wheel drive.
That detail matters. On paper, all-wheel drive is usually the easier path to faster acceleration and more accessible performance. Rear-wheel drive points to a different priority: involvement, balance and the behaviour of the chassis once the road starts to turn.
Weight is the other big story
Mercedes-AMG says the car is around 170 kilograms lighter thanks to an extensive lightweight-construction programme. It also receives a unique wide-body, newly developed coil-over suspension and a dedicated aerodynamic package.
That combination is more interesting to us than another simple horsepower increase. Modern performance cars have become extraordinarily fast, but also larger, heavier and more isolated. Removing mass can change the character of a car in almost every situation: braking, turn-in, direction changes and the feeling of connection at normal speeds.
Why this AMG matters
The CLE 646 is part of the highly limited Mythos Series and will be handcrafted in Affalterbach. That immediately makes it a collector-oriented product, but the more important point may be what it represents.
It is a modern AMG that openly prioritises the ingredients enthusiasts have historically associated with the brand: a large V8, rear-wheel drive, dramatic proportions and a chassis developed around the driver.
That does not automatically make it a future classic. Rarity alone is not enough, and the eventual market value will depend on production, specification, provenance, condition and how the car is received once customers actually drive it. But as a statement of intent, this is one of the more interesting AMG launches in recent years.

The headline is 646 hp. The more important numbers may be the missing 170 kg and the number two: two driven wheels.
For a brand with such a strong history of charismatic V8 road cars, the CLE 646 looks less like an exercise in chasing a lap-time spreadsheet and more like an attempt to preserve a particular kind of AMG experience.
