The 1990s produced several cars that everybody now agrees are important. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550 is different: it still feels under-discussed.
It was expensive, heavy, hand-built and brutally powerful. That combination made it a very different proposition from a Ferrari or Porsche of the same period, but today that difference is part of its appeal.
Rarity helps, but condition is everything. These are complicated, low-volume cars, and the gap between a properly maintained example and a tired one can be enormous.
My view: the V550 is not for someone looking for easy ownership. It is for someone who wants an authentic old Aston with absurd character. That is exactly why I think the best examples will remain special.
