The E39 M5 has already crossed the line from used performance saloon to recognised modern classic. The interesting part now is that the market is becoming more selective.
Low mileage still gets attention, but mileage by itself is not enough. These cars are old enough that storage, servicing, cooling-system work, suspension condition, corrosion and previous modifications can matter more than the number on the odometer.
The strongest cars are the ones that still feel coherent: correct wheels, original interior, sensible paintwork, full history and evidence that the S62 V8 has been maintained properly. A higher-mileage car with excellent records can be more desirable than a neglected low-mileage example.
The E39 also has a powerful long-term story. Manual gearbox, naturally aspirated V8, rear-wheel drive and a relatively discreet body are a combination that has almost disappeared from the market.
My view: do not chase the lowest mileage. Chase the best car. In ten years, buyers will pay for condition, provenance and originality first.
